Biography

ROBERT D. ELY has handled all forms of insurance defense litigation, is AV rated, has extensive trial experience in the State and Federal Courts and excels before a jury. His extensive experience includes medical malpractice, construction, premises, defective products, sports, Dram-shop, security, playground and automobile liability cases. Mr. Ely has successfully defended at trial medical institutions, skilled nursing facilities and their personnel, including physicians, nurses, physical, occupational and speech therapists in malpractice litigation throughout the metropolitan New York City area, including Long Island and Westchester Counties. He has also successfully defended other businesses in complex construction litigation, drafted appellate briefs and successfully argued before the Appellate Division of the State of New York.

Mr. Ely began his career as a Kings County (Brooklyn, NY) Assistant District Attorney from 1987 to 1994. He became a Senior Trial Attorney in the DA's Office, then leaving the field of criminal law to concentrate on civil litigation. For the past 27 years he has tried almost every type of case in the Courts of New York and proffered and/or cross-examined expert witnesses covering a large spectrum of the litigation arena, including almost every type of medical specialty, Economists, Care Planners, Vocationalists, Engineers, Architects, Medical Examiners, Forensic Scientists, Union Representatives, Ballistics, Fingerprinting, and Accident or Crime Reconstruction specialists.

Since leaving the DA's Office, Mr. Ely has also continued his commitment to public service. Mr. Ely is a Member and Chair of Community Board 2, which serves the Greenwich Village, SoHo, NoHo and Chinatown communities in Lower Manhattan. He has been and continues to be a vocal advocate for education, the siting of public schools, and public safety. He has also been asked to serve as a Community Representative and Advisor for various economic development projects for Lower Manhattan post Hurricane Sandy.
